Think Outside the Box

Architecture workshop from 23 to 27 Ferbuary 2004 in the Ulster University School of Architecture, Belfast.

The workshop was an “investigation into the residuals of the city”, made use of items considered superfluous by the consumer market and applied those items to appropriate unclaimed spaces in the city for public use. Starting from the dictionary definition of appropriation, being: “1. Right or suitable; fitting 2. to take for one’s own use , esp. illegally 3. To put aside for a particular purpose or person [lat: appropriare  to make one’s own <proprius one’s own>]”, the workshop re-made urban public space the place where ideas, plans and opinions are challenged.

The students were provided with bin liners, tape and helium filled balloons to meet their target. With the most resourceful strategies –like ironing bin-liners together in order not to make them heavy with tape- the students of the first year architecture created a big yellow cube with the words think outside the box spelled across the four sides of the cube. The object was placed in front of Saint Anne’s Cathedral where it prompted passers-by to think outside the box.

The workshop was part of the educational project Four days in the Outside.
