Suite Jourdan Suite

Musical event in 2000 to allow residents of the European Quarter in Brussels to identify more with their neighbourhood.

The residents of the Jourdan, Leopold and Stevin areas of Brussels are the ones who suffer from living in the capital of Europe. The establishment of the European bureaucracies in what used to be a densely populated area has severely damaged the social fabric. House prices plummeted, heritage buildings were taken down and local shops closed. Yet the local population chose not to stand by and watch how Europe took over their neighbourhood.

With help from the Louis Paul Boon Kring, neighbourhood committees brought together the local community to write and perform a musical suite. The performance became an annual event, and on two occasions City Mine(d) and Cinema Nova contributed with open air cinema, and interventions on the central square, like projecting images of the area in a façade during the performance of the suite.
