La Poissonnerie

La Poissonnerie used a derelict Art Nouveau shop as community space, meeting- and exhibition room and office in 1998.

The former poissonerie of the Quartier Léopold in Ixelles had been derelict for decades. It was in the hands of an owner who lacked the means to maintain the building and the desire to bring the listed building on the market. As a consequence, the poissonnerie had become severely dilapidated and added to the already grim image of the European neighbourhood in Brussels.

A number of potential users were brought together, and the owner was convinced to allow the use of the building for cultural activities for one year. After a thorough clean up, the shop window became a place for neighbourhood meetings, home to City Mine(d)’s offices and to l’Afish’s’theek, a collection of fanzines, videos, audio-cassettes, CDs, T-shirts, books, pamphlets and posters. L’Afish’s’theek sold not for profit and hand-crafted work, and called them micro-editions.

The organizations had to make way for a restaurant where the average price per head is around 40 Euros.
