Hugo

The ambulant ‘jugeria’ Hugo called at four public places in Brussels in 2002, and was seen again in 2004.

Hugo is a catalyst to motivate the (potential) users of public space to take initiative. Its ephemeral character keeps it outside discussions of design-solutions for a place. With little means and in a positive way, it questions the solutions that have been produced or are proposed for certain sites. At the same time Hugo’s mobility allows for different public spaces to be connected. It brings issues and users of the space together in a larger, metropolitan context.

Hugo is a 1960s Wawa-caravan transformed by Wim Degraeve and Quinten Lavigne. The jugeria – or juice bar- provided a basis on which several other functions could be plugged: inflatable seats, a stage, a sound system, … Juices and entertainment are a promotional stunt for public space and its importance in the city. Hugo owes its exotic touch to the Latin-American girls who prepare the juices while-you-wait and bring out the sun even in Brussels.

After a severe car crash in 2002, Hugo was resurrected in 2004 and starred again at Pleinopenair.
